Thai people never loose their sense of humour and are always full of marvellous ideas, even in the worst-case scenario. A lot of fun, dark humor, or unusual scenes, hereunder are some pictures from Facebook, Twitter and Thai newspapers.

Click on the below photos to get bigger and better quality pictures

Fatalisme bouddhiste me direz-vous ? En tout cas, d’émouvantes images !

ENGLISH : The floods in Thailand are the worst the country has ever seen since the last 60 years. Some areas have been flooded for weeks, even for months for some places ! However, no one can tell for sure how long the floods will last, how fast the waters will reach the inner part of Bangkok and how long it will take to completely evacuate to the sea.

Thai authorities seems disorganized and aren’t really able to control the amount of waters approaching the inner parts of Bangkok, even with the dykes, the canals of the city nor the big sand bags barriers. And not to mention that the main authorities involded often disagree and keep themselves busy with a political struggle between the governement (The Prime Minister, the FROC and the Irrigation Department) supported by the Red-shirt people standing for the rural areas, and the BMA, the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority, linked to the yellow-shirts, the King’s party and the one of the Thai elite, most of whom live in inner Bangkok.

But everybody understand for sure that lots of floods victims are angry as they feel like they have been sacrificed to protect inner Bangkok and request that dykes are open so as to let the waters leave their areas and go to the sea through Bangkok. A reasonable request I guess though that may lead to floods in the economical and financial heart of the capital.

While visiting the flooded area of Pinklao, I was struck by Thai people’s courage, how most of them could keep smiling and joking when experiencing such dramatic floods, without knowing when they are able to return to their home. I was also amazed by the dedicated Royal Thai Navy staff who would assist the flood victims in a good mood. Some would say it is Buddhist fatalism. I would rather say it is moving scenes.

Above photo 1, October 25th, 2011 : Before the high tide critical long week-end of October 27th to 31st, and fearing any power and water cuts, residents of central Bangkok and its suburbs emptied lots of supermarket shelves : no more local bottled water, rice, canned food, eggs, dried noddles nor wipes. Here, at Tops Silom, buyers could not even find washing powder, chips, gloves and buckets. It is not hard to get cooked food, meats, fruits and vegetables, but prices of some items have clearly increased. Tesco Lotus and Big C even had to import eggs and bottled water from Malaisie ! When found, bottled water is 3 to 5 times more expensive than usual. Street shops and even locals who lost their jog and became street vendors started to sell very useful items such as boats, boots and life jackets.

Indeed, in most flooded areas, the waters are full of chemicals coming from flooded industrial zones.

Above photos, 33 and 34, taken on October 30th, 2011 : Don Muang airport is Bangkok’s second airport but only Thai low-cost airlines such as Orient Thai and Nok Air now operate there for domestic flights. Officials announced that Don Muang was safe but they were wrong as Don Muang was quickly flooded. By now, water exceeds the belly of the aircrafts ! Road have been closed, areas in and around the airport evacuated, only motorboats and bigh trucks can get through the area and face strong currents in some parts.

From June to August vistors may enjoy the Dok Krachao blooming at Hin Pa Ngam and Sai Thong national parks. But most Thais advised us to go rather to Sai Thong, as Hin Pa Ngam is much more crowded. Nevertheless, on the spot, there were lots of Thai visitors in Sai Thong, especially during long week-ends (July 15th-17th). In organized tours from Bangkok, the Thais would visit 3 parks in only 2 days but the journey is long (11h return) ! As for us, we spent 2 nights in Sai Thong after a morning stop the first day at Saraburi to attend the Tat Bak Do Mai (flower offerings festival). Even with crowds of visitors, it is still worth making the 4.8 kms return walk to see the 5 fields of flowers in Sai Thong National Park. (Travelling infos below the photos)

// Map of the park : visitors may park their cars at campsite 2 and 3 but most of them prefer to walk from the #2. The 4 or 4.8 kms return walk from campsite 2 is quite easy. When it rains, the path from campsite 3 to 2 through the fields 4 and 5 becomes muddy but is easily overcome with good trekking shoes (Thai people usually wear city shoes). Though dirty, this path is less crowdy than the one from campsite 2 to 3 through fields 3,2 and 1. The laziest visitors may drive directly to campsite 3 which offers direct view over the field #1, the biggest and the most beautiful.

From Richard Barrow’s blog : “Last July 10th, 285 Hilltribe people, mainly youngsters, were being ordained as novice monks t the Marble Temple also called Wat Benchamabopit in Bangkok. The boys and young adults taking part in this ordination ceremony came from 13 different provinces around Thailand. This is an annual project that has been organized in order to promote Buddhism among the Hilltribe people. This year it was done in honour of the 84th birthday of H.M. The King which is on the 5th December. Normally young men being ordained as monks are supported by their families. However, as many of these Hilltribe people come from poor backgrounds, members of the public were invited to sponsor one of the novice monks. They donated 2,500 Baht to a scholarship fund and were then able to make merit by presenting the robes.” (For more details and photos, click HERE).

With colourful braces, glasses without glass are the latest trend with Thai youngsters. Weird trend as I dream of getting rid of my glasses (with glass) that I’ve had since more than twenty years !

Thanks to Thuan, we enjoyed an unsual three hours and a half boat trip in the canals of Bangkok. Thuan has been living in Thailand for over 26 years, some of them in one of the numerous khlongs. He owns a small 3 seats boat. We got through untouristy and verdant small canals some being no more than 1.5 m wide (the usual long tail boats brings tourists only on the main canals such as Bangkok Noi). On the way, we met soup and fruits vendors, garbage and electricity boats. Even bankers and postmen row around the area ! We stopped at Lat Mayom floating market for lunch where we met mostly Thai people. Beware of cat fish in front of temples, they will splash your personal belongings ! Thuan uses the money he gets to repair wooden small boats for old residents of the canals.

GETTING THERE : Prices for a 3h-4h boat trip : 900 B for a three seats boat (2 passengers + Thuan as a driver) and 1,200 B for a bigger and noisier boat (driver is Thai and Thuan guides). Big boats do not go through the small canals.
